Photovoltaic Cells
- The basic building blocks of solar panels are photovoltaic cells, typically made of silicon. Silicon is chosen for its semiconducting properties.
- Each cell consists of two layers: a positive layer (p-type) and a negative layer (n-type). These layers create an electric field between them.
Absorption of Sunlight
- When sunlight (photons) strikes the surface of the solar panel, it interacts with the semiconductor material.
- The energy from the photons is absorbed by the semiconductor material, exciting the electrons in the process.
Generation of Electric Current
- The absorbed energy frees electrons from their atomic bonds, creating electron-hole pairs. The electric field within the cell causes these electrons to move toward the negative layer, creating an electric current.
Electrical Conductors
- Metal conductive plates on the sides of the cell collect the electrons and transfer them as an electric current. This current is in the form of direct current (DC).
Inverter Conversion
- The electricity generated by individual cells is in DC form. However, most household appliances and the power grid use alternating current (AC).
- An inverter connected to the solar panel system converts the DC electricity into AC electricity, making it compatible with your home's electrical system.
Utility Grid Connection (Optional)
- If your solar panel system is grid-tied, any excess electricity generated can be fed back into the utility grid. This is often facilitated through a net metering arrangement where you receive credits for the excess power you contribute.
Powering Your Home
- The converted AC electricity is then used to power your home. If your energy needs exceed what the solar panels are producing, your home will draw additional power from the grid. Conversely, if your solar panels generate more electricity than your home consumes, the excess is fed back into the grid.
Storage (Optional)
- In some setups, surplus energy can be stored in batteries for later use, allowing you to have power during periods when the sun is not shining.
